Waringarri Aboriginal Arts

16 Speargrass Rd, Kununurra, WA, 6743

Waringarri Aboriginal Arts was established in the late 1980s by senior cultural leaders of the East Kimberley as a place of art and culture that would also support economic aspirations for artists and their community. Owned and operated by the Miriwoong community, Waringarri Arts is the first Indigenous owned art centre established in the Kimberley and one of the oldest continuously operating art centres in Australia. Artists specialise in ochre paintings, limited edition prints, ceramics, textiles, artefacts and engraved boab nuts.
The centre also supports Kira Kiro Artists in Kalumburu. Kira Kiro Artists is the Kalumburu community’s recognised art centre, located on land of the Kwini people in north-western Western Australia. Kira Kiro or Kirri Kirri are Kwini spiritual figures featured in the rock art galleries around Kalumburu and believed to be painted by the beak of the Sandstone Strike Thrush with blood from the tips of its wings. The name was adopted by important senior artist Mary Punchi Clement known for her intricate depiction of the region’s flora, fauna and associated stories.
