My grandfather named Kamplan was hunting at Pinta, at the top end of Christmas Creek. He had walked inland from the coastal area. While he was looking about for animals, enjoying his walkabout, he heard a horse bell. That sound struck fear in his heart because it meant police were nearby. They happened to be travelling in the same direction as Kamplan. He ran back to his family by the big swamp at Pinta and warned them of the policeman approach. The family ran towards the coastal ridges where the thick scrub provided good cover. But by the time he had alerted everyone else, there was no time for my grandfather to hide. He climbed the nearest tree Yuku Ko’ongoh which was heavily foliated. Unfortunately the tree was infested with green ants. He had to remain quiet & still as the ants bit him from head to toe. Trackers passed close by, and as soon as they were out of sight, he dropped to the ground and rolled in the dirt to get rid of the ants. He hurt himself a little when he landed, and his whole body swelled up from the ant bites. All the same, he was happy to have saved his family from potential trouble with the policemen. The old people could never be sure what those trackers might do. It was best to hide.
