The story of Truganini has resonated with Nick, which inspired him to create a series on the last Tasmanians. Truganini painted here in Ochre, a natural clay earth pigment, ranging in colour from yellow to deep brown. Ochre can be found in many areas of Australia and has been used in paintings dating back to ancient times. Nick explains that in Tasmania, there are cliffs, very steep and often dangerous, where ceremonial ochre can be sourced by women.

Nick Kupetsky is a Palawa man from Tasmania and has been an artist for well over twenty years. His works have been exhibited in the National Gallery of Victoria and he has exhibited extensively through being a member of Baluk Arts Aboriginal Art Centre based in Mornington VIC.

Nick’s work is inspired by old black and white photographs of his ancestors that provide a historical reference to the events of European impact on Tasmanian Aboriginal people. Nick’s large charcoal and ochre drawings capture emotions of grief and loss, yet also the person’s strength and determination. Nick has used his art to research his background and understand his history as a Palawa man.  Nick equally has the ability to paint landscapes in oil or acrylic, capturing the spiritual essence of the land.
