The waters around Pormpuraaw are filled with prawns during prawn season. They hide in the mangroves when they are growing. Once they get big they move to the river and shallow water at the beach. This is what we call prawn season. During this time the mullet, salmon and barramundi feed on the prawns. Large flocks of pelicans can be seen chasing them. This is a good time for fishing because the fish are close to shore.
