“Ngijinta ngarriju (my Grandmother) Kulkitji Tondoingati (English name Rhea Loogatha) was a powerful woman in our tribal lore. One of her abilities was to kawatacha or ‘sing’ (bring forth with magic) the weather, including lightning, thunder and even cyclones.
This kawatacha could help bring mala (rain) when needed, but also strong weather if she was cross.
I remember my ngarriju as warm, loving, happy and passionate; but she was also not the type of woman that you would want to upset or offend.
My Mothers and other Elders tell me that my ngarriju would walk into the water cracking her special rocks together in the sea, whilst chanting her spell. The sea would rise angrily and the weather would turn bad, bringing heavy rain, lightning and destructive winds.”
