The fruit of the nampula (Cluster fig – Ficus racemosa) are eaten when they turn red to brown. The fruit that fall into the river are eaten by fish called yawu and turtles called narrinyjila. Where they grow is generally a good place to go fishing as the fish are already there waiting for food. The fruit that are not ripe are called mujurrku. They are still green and cannot be eaten. The pale white wood can be used to make kawarla (coolamon). In the past the logs were used as floats when crossing large rivers. Sometimes children sat on the logs to cross the rivers. Flying foxes called warrpawurru also eat the fruit. This plant is the Dreaming or totem for some Gurindji people.
