Celebrating 5 years of Dialysis in Pukatja  

In August 2019, Purple House opened its first South Australian clinic, the Kinyin McKenzie Dialysis Centre, a four-chair facility in Pukatja/Ernabella on the APY Lands.

Without on Country dialysis many people are forced to leave their communities and families to seek treatment for end-stage renal failure in Alice Springs, Adelaide, or Darwin. With treatment on Country in Pukatja artists and patients have been able to return home and pass on cultural knowledge in their community over the past 5 years.

The first artist to return home was the incredible Tjunkaya Tapaya OAM whose artwork features on this postcard and on the dialysis clinic entrance. The clinic is named for Kinyin McKenzie, Tjunkaya’s brother, and in memory of those who fought for this service and passed away before they were able to get home.

Thank you to Tjunkaya Tapaya OAM for her work ‘Kungkarangkalpa / Seven Sisters’ (2440 x 1230 Acrylic on Wood, 23 February 2024), that features both on this giftbox and also hangs at the entrance of the dialysis clinic.
