This painting depicts Kaaril, the now uncommon vine plant which is sometimes referred to as Bush Passionfruit and sometimes Bush Cucumber (Cucumis melo). The fruit may be eaten when they are ripe, light green. The fruit must be rubbed before eating to remove any short hairs which may be on the outside. If these are not removed, the lips and tongue may become sore and painful. The fruit have a sweet taste and crispy texture when ripe. When fully ripe, they have a strong sweet smell. This plant was very common before the arrival of European settlers and their cattle.

When Kirriputputta (Pheasant Coucal) calls, he is singing to this plant to make more fruit.
