Girriŋgirriŋ is the Yolŋu word for seed or shell made jewellery, necklace, or ornament.

These necklaces are made from seashells which yolŋu call ḻuthuḻuthu. ḻuthuḻuthu is the generic term for shiny, attractve shells that are usually inedible. Varieties include mauritia arabica, turbo petholatus, erronea cylindrica & monodonta labio.

Seashells are collected at low tide on beach or on the surface of the mud amongst the mangroves. Then they are boiled, cleaned and pierced with a piece of wire if needed before being threaded onto wire to make the necklace.
