Our traditional homelands are scattered across the Tanami desert. The desert educates us; it is a book, it is our museum. We learn to trust what we read in the desert. The colours and patterns change throughout the year, and the stories of the land tell us when particular bush foods are ready to be harvested. There are patterns in the water, the grasslands and spinifex country, the tracks left by animals and people. Every time the wind blows the patterns change. We recognise the desert patterns. Traditionally, we drew the symbols in the sand to pass knowledge to our children or painted them as body art for ceremonies. Desert patterns teach us the stories to our lives.
