Birds hold a special place in Tiwi life and the bird can hold significant meaning. Sometimes they are messengers of good and bad news, other times they bring warnings from afar, sometimes they are good “Yinkiti” (food). For the carvers the type of bird they carve does not matter for the important piece is the story in ochre painted on the bird. These stories represent the familial lines and history of their culture. From their mothers story, fathers story and their kinship story are all represented in the lines and colours on the carving.
