Tanya Singer

Tanya Singer is minyma Anangu, an Aboriginal woman from a family with a long history of distinctive style of design.

Her mother Sadie Singer, was a great carver and worked for many years with Maruku. Her older sister Trisha Singer is also an accomplished Maruku artist. Her brother John Singer is the Chairperson for Nganampa Health and her brother Bernard Singer is a director of the APY Land Council and a great carver himself. Tanya is a member of different boards and also works as a translator. She has three daughters. Instructed in traditional carving by her grandmothers, aunts and mothers, she brings her own flair and attention to detail to her work. Married to Djabugay and Western Yalanji man Errol Evans from far north Queensland, the couple form a strong carving team merging traditions from the wet tropics and the desert.

Tanya, Errol and her youngest daughter live together with her Hungarian father in Railway Bore where they have established a carving workshop for the family. Each year over the hot summer period the couple moves to the North of Queensland and works with Errol’s family. Tanya is a very inventive and contemporary artist. She is currently working on a collaborative project with the designer Trent Jansen. Her new medium is photography. She won the Desart Photo Prize 2021. Tanya is also an artist with Iwantja Arts in Indulkana.
