Sandra Edwards Nawurla (Napurrula)

Karungkarni Art and Culture

Sandra Edwards Nawurla (Napurrula) was born in 1960 in Lajamanu. She now lives in Daguragu with her family. She has two sons and two daughters, eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Sandra has worked at Kalkaringi School as an Aboriginal Assistant Teacher. She has also worked with linguist, Erika Charola, to record and teach Gurindji language to school children. She would take children on excursions to the town and into the bush to learn about the environment outside of Kalkaringi and Daguragu communities.

Sandra loves to spend her spare time fishing, looking for bush food and bush medicine, and attending the Karungkarni Art Centre to create paintings.

She learned to paint from her father who taught her the importance of knowing your own Dreaming story. Sandra’s Dreaming story is that of the Wampana (Spectacled Hare Wallaby) and Ngurlu (Grinding Seed).
