Rhonda Napanangka

Rhonda Napanangka was born in Papunya, NT in 1964, and has strong family ties to the founders of the Central Western Desert painting movement. Her mother’s country is Karrinyarra and Ngalwerrty [Central Mt Wedge] side and her father’s country is Broken Windmill, west of Central Mt Wedge. Napanangka first learnt to paint when she was a young girl, learning from her mother’s brother, Clifford Possum Tjapaltjarri, who is considered one of the most collected and renowned Australian Aboriginal artists. Napanangka paints alongside her mother Elizabeth Nampitjinpa and her daughter Nerine at Tangentyere Artists, continuing to learn from and teach family. 

Rhonda’s favourite story to paint is her mother’s brother’s story at Central Mount Wedge. This is a private story, but relates to Kapi Tjukurrpa (Water Dreaming). Rhonda’s style is incredibly neat in her application and the colours she chooses create elegant works filled with rhythm and repetition that delight her audience.
