Miranda Cook

Miranda Cook, skin name Napurrula, is the daughter of famed Warlpiri artists Henry and Sonya Cook. She is part of the younger generation of Lajamanu artists that are gaining recognition for their own artwork while creating a legacy through sharing Warlpiri knowledge of tradition and story with local youth and bringing it to a greater audience to prevent the decline of their culture.

Napurrula’s art often presents and follows the knowledge of her family’s traditional Jukurrpa (Dreaming). But there is another side to her artwork that employs a non-traditional style laden with colours that are reminiscent of 1980s pop culture, the decade of her birth.

Seeking contemporary means of expression, Napurrula has found success with her use of bright and bold rainbow effects. Her paintings will often feature splashes of colour that are reflective of her engaging and friendly personality. Her modern art presents an important connection between Aboriginal culture and the Western world.

Napurrula recognises the importance of allowing her art to evolve, as she continues to explore new and creative means of expression that appeal to contemporary and modern culture.
