Maimie Nginytja Butler
Papulankutja ArtistsMaimie (also spelled Maime) was born in the bush and grew up in the Papulankuta (Blackstone) area, living for a long time with Kantijupai Benson. She is the eldest of seven siblings and her mother was a Mitchell. She spent much of her childhood in the Benson camp with Kantjupayi Benson. Later she went with the Benson family to Warburton. Maimie is a Mitchell and the country north of Blackstone along the Walu road is Mitchell country with many stories and important cultural places. Mamie married Mark Butler from Tjukurrla way and spends time travelling extensively throughout the Lands and beyond to visit family and for activities and events.
Maimie has taken many leadership roles including as Papulankutja Artists Chairperson, Chairperson and member of the Board of Directors for NPY Women’s Council and Deputy Chairperson, Blackstone Community Council. She has worked with Utikulintja at NPY Womens Council Mental Health.
Over the years she has worked in education, health, the community store and the art centre.
She is responsible for maintaining many songlines has a number of stories she can paint including two she prefers to paint: perentie and echidna.
Her son Dixon Butler is also a painter at Papulankutja Artists.
