APY Art Centre Collective

My name is Lisa Khan, I was born in 1987 and I’m from Coober Pedy. Yankunytjatjara/antakirinja is my language. I paint about my Grandmother’s Country, she was born at Mount Barry near Coober Pedy. And My Grandfather’s country, he was born at Wallintina Station. I paint the parente tjukurpait’s a very important story from my grandfather’s country about the parente lizard that stole the grinding stone. I also like to paint my home Coober Pedy. Growing up we used to look for Opal and play in the sand. My grandmother showed us how to hunt lizards, we caught the ankata (bearded dragon) would prepare it and cook it on the fire and look for bush tucker and different bush fruits. When I paint, I feel connected to my country and my grandparents who aren’t here anymore. I am telling my stories through my paintingto pass it on to my son, nephews and nieces
