Kumantjayi Nelson

Tangentyere Artists and Yarrenyty Arltere Artists

Kumantjayi Nelson was born in Mparntwe (Alice Springs). She grew up at Kwale Kwale, surrounded by all her family and learnt many stories about country, culture and bush food from her grandmother Mrs. T Inkamala. This was a strong and happy place for her. Nelson went to Yipirinya school every day on the bus from Kwale Kwale. Now her mother is a senior teacher there as are many of her family members. Nelson spent many years living at Utopia as this is her husband’s county. Some years ago, Nelson, her husband and their two children moved to Yarrenyty Arltere Town Camp to be close to family and services.  Her aunty Rhonda Sharpe encouraged her to come into the art room and taught her to sew. For Nelson the art room was a peaceful place to work and be with family, her artwork reflects this quiet sentiment.
