Ian was born and raised in Milikapiti. He divides his time between his duties as cleaner at the local clinic and Jilamara. He practices painting and carving.

Ian is recognized as a great dancer. He performed at the 30th anniversary of the Telstra Indigenous art awards in Darwin in 2012 and at AP7 in Brisbane later that year.
