Dylan Miller-Poulson Japangardi

Karungkarni Art and Culture

Dylan Miller Poulson Japangardi is a young Warlpiri artist and member of Karungkarni Art Centre in Kalkarindji in the northern Tanami Desert / Victoria River region of the Northern Territory. Dylan was born in Katherine in 1989 and has been a regular painter at the art centre since 2013. He loves to paint Dreaming stories which he learnt from his grandmother and grandfather. Dylan’s grandmother is a Warlpiri woman from a place in the Tanami Desert called Mt Davison. His mother showed him how to paint when he was still very young and, later, he learned as much as he could by watching his grandmother paint.

Dylan and his wife, Narelle, are both employed at Karungkarni Art as art workers. They have two children and look after children from their extended family. In 2014, Dylan and Narelle attended training in digital archiving with IRCA in Canberra (Indigenous Remote Communications Association) and in 2015 he was selected as one of nine artists from across the Top End to participate in ANKA’s Art Worker Extension Program (AWEP), from which he graduated. Dylan’s interests include working with digital video media and music.

Dylan’s artwork has featured in several events and exhibitions including the annual exhibition at Charles Darwin University ACIKE Unit commemorating the Vincent Lingiari Memorial Lecture (2015-2018). His artwork, Making of the History Book, is toured Australia as part of the exhibition, Still In My Mind: Gurindji location, experience and visuality.
