Cynthia Burke

Maruku Arts

Born in Alice Springs, Cynthia grew up in the Ngaanyatjarra Lands of Western Australia. After boarding school in Kalgoorlie she became a youth and media worker with NG Media where she is a current director and radio host. An internationally exhibited painter with Warakurna Artists, she is also very successful with Tjanpi Desert Weavers where she works as a field officer. Inspired from a young age by her late mother, artist and Maruku director, Jean Burke, she is one of the foremost up and coming wood carvers. In 2014 she became one of Maruku’s youngest directors. Cynthia was shortlisted for the Telstra Art Award in 2020. From the traditions of Tjukurpa, the Law and culture of her lands, Cynthia has created her own modern and sculptural style to tell her stories.
