Barbara Moore

Tjanpi Desert Weavers

Barbara Moore is an artist who lives in the remote South Australian community of Amata. Barbara is a proud Anmatyerre woman originally from the Ti Tree (Tea Tree) community 190 kilometres north of Alice Springs in Central Australia.

Barbara is a highly regarded painter with Tjala Arts, creating bold, large-scale canvases. She won the prestigious General Painting Award at the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Award (Telstra Prize) in 2012. Barbara also makes ceramics with Tjala Arts.

Barbara is the daughter-in-law of well-known Tjanpi artists Mary Pan Katajuku and Ilawanti Ken. She has spent many hours watching these ladies weaving and eventually decided to try her hand at the practice. She has a flair for colour, as she does in her paintings, and a natural ability with fibre work. She loves sitting around with the other ladies making Tjanpi, laughing and watching each other, learning from one another. She says it is good fun and she loves learning new skills.
