About Ngaruwanajirri Inc

Ngaruwanajirri means ‘helping one another’ in Tiwi.

Ngaruwanajirri started in 1994 with funding for the support of Tiwi with disabilities and the core artists today have disabilities.

Situated in Wurrumiyanga on Bathurst Island, Ngaruwanajirri works out of the beautiful, heritage listed building known as The Keeping Place. Sometimes called the Tiwi Sistine Chapel, a group of Tiwi artists and carvers attend daily to create artwork in a peaceful environment.

Each artist has developed exceptional creative approaches to creating jilamara (Tiwi for art and design). The work of Ngaruwanajirri artists are unique and sought after by art collectors in Australia and internationally.

A separate group of Tiwi carvers work alongside this core group in a purpose-built space adjacent to the Keeping Place creating both large and small carvings.

The artists produce paintings in both ochres and watercolours. Locally sourced ochres are worked on both canvas and high-quality archival papers, while watercolours are exclusively on archival paper.

The carvers' works connect with Tiwi culture and arts practices including the artists' interpretation of jilamara, quirky wood carvings, notably Tiwi busts and Pukumani burial poles as well a variety of birds unique to the Islands.

Shipping policy

Ngaruwanajirri uses Australia Post for its shipping under 1metre and under 22kg.

Large works (1m+) – Please contact us for a quote on shipping.

The purchased price includes parcel insurance, tracking and sign on delivery.

We use Express Post wherever possible and use tracking and insurance on the purchased price.

Shipping Policy

The following are the terms and conditions that constitute our Shipping Policy:

Domestic Shipping Policy – Free express domestic shipping only for artworks.

Shipment processing time – All orders are processed within 5 business days, where upon you will receive a tracking number for your purchase. Orders can only be shipped once a week due to our remote location. Orders are not processed on weekends or holidays. If we are experiencing a high volume of orders, shipments may be delayed by a few days. Please allow additional days in transit for delivery. If there is a significant delay in shipment of your order, we will contact you via email or telephone. Delivery delays can occasionally occur.

Refund policy

Cancellation / Return / Exchange Policy

If you’re looking for a refund of your order, for whatever reason, we’re here to help! We offer free returns or exchanges within 30 days of receiving your order.

You can return the product to us for an exchange with an equivalent product, or we can refund your payment into the original account used to make the purchase. Please note the following exceptions to our return and exchange policy:

  • Discounted items are final and cannot be returned or exchanged
  • Returned items must have all original documentation, tags still on and be returned in original packaging
  • Returned items must be in their original condition and have no visible signs of wear, use or damage

  • Send the item back to us
  • Send us an invoice to cover the shipping cost for returns
